Jewelry Appraisals

We go beyond the microscope to identify, authenticate, verify and grade diamonds and gemstones.

Gemology is a applied science. It is a scientific study of diamonds and colored gemstones. Our staff Graduate Gemologists attended the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and includes a former instructor at GIA. They are skilled in the use and application of precision gemological instruments. Our past and present memberships include the International Society of Appraisers and the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers, to name a few. We have even been tested and passed the qualifications of USPAP through the Appraisers Association of America. We go beyond the microscope to identify, authenticate, verify and grade diamonds and colored gemstones.

Our appraisal statement of replacement report is based on scientifically determined facts and in depth research in the field of gemology as well as appraisal theory. Values determined are based on the most common and appropriate market as selected by the client during the initial consultation.

The gemological methods we use are standardized logical testing procedures that are non-invasive and do not harm the items tested. It is important to be able to distinguish natural diamonds and colored gemstones from lab grown and synthetics as well as enhancement treatments that may have been performed on the gemstones being evaluated.

Gemological testing and knowledge of appraisal theory are necessary for accurate evaluations and statements of replacement. With our state of the art gemological instruments and up to date training, we are able to deliver a finished product beyond the expectations of the client.

Why You Need A Jewelry Appraisal

  1. Why do I need current appraisals for my jewelry?
The most important reason is for insurance purposes. Over the years, the value of your jewelry and gemstones can fluctuate. If your last appraisal is over three years old it may be out-of-date. Your jewelry could be insured for less than its replacement value, so you might be risking a substantial financial loss if your jewelry is lost, stolen or damaged. We will provide you with accurate appraisal reports based on current market values so you can obtain adequate insurance coverage. Appraisals are also good to determine the retail replacement value, confirm authenticity and for estate and tax purposes, divorce settlements, donations and loans.

  2. I already have an appraisal from the store where my jewelry was purchased. Why do I need another appraisal?
Even though a value may be placed on a purchased item, it is advisable to have a second opinion to confirm the retail replacement value of your jewelry. Amber's designs certified appraisers and GIA graduate gemologists will take the time necessary to write an accurate, in-depth appraisal that will help you avoid paying excessive premiums or under-insuring your jewelry.

  3. I have homeowner's insurance. If I lose my jewelry, I am automatically covered.
You may not be covered for loss or damage unless you have your jewelry appraised and scheduled separately on your homeowner’s policy. Amber's Designs Fine Jewelry will individually document and photograph your jewelry so you can have it properly scheduled. Our documents are accepted by all insurance carriers.

  4. What is included in a Amber's Designs Fine Jewelry jewelry appraisal?
Each Amber's Designs Fine Jewelry appraisal includes complete laboratory testing of your jewelry and an appraisal report for your records. The report contains such information as

    1. The content and weight of precious metals

    2. A detailed description of diamonds and gemstones i.e. carat weight, cut, clarity, color, measurements, proportion and finish

    3. Color photograph(s)

    4. The retail/replacement/or estate value of your jewelry

    5. An appropriate value of your jewelry based on our initial consultation

  5. How can I be sure my Amber's Designs Fine Jewelry appraisal is accurate?                                                           All laboratory tests are performed by G.I.A. Graduate Gemologists using the industry's most precise scientific instrumentation within the limitations present at the time of testing. We research current market values derived from many networking system that constantly monitors prices throughout the industry and compares prices and trends.

  6. Do I have to leave my jewelry with you to have it appraised?
We will appraise your jewelry while you watch and wait but please make an appointment. You can also leave it with us and pick it up at your convenience. If you leave it with us we will give you a receipt with a photo. We also respect your privacy and all appraisals are strictly confidential.

  7. Do my diamonds and stones need to be removed for an appraisal?
Diamonds and other gemstones are not removed from their settings for examination. All lab tests are perfectly safe and will not damage or alter your jewelry in any way. It is advisable to bring in any previous appraisals, receipts or reports as to have accurate weights of stones since they are not removed, only measured for calculated weights. The previous reports also provide a vital "baseline" for the overall condition census of your items.

  8. How much should I expect to pay for an appraisal?
Amber's Designs Fine Jewelry charges a flat fee per item for each appraisal. This fee is based on one item. If there are more than 2 items, a bulk rate could apply. Estimates for bulk rates are based on individual circumstances needed to perform the tests and calculations. Fees are not determined by the value of the jewelry.

  9. Do I need to make an appointment for an appraisal?
You do not need to make an appointment during regular office hours if you want to drop your items off. We do ask that you make an appointment for our "While You Wait, While You Watch" services, which we offer on most Mondays and Tuesdays with appointments made in advance.

  10. I have inherited jewelry I do not want. Can you help me?
